Why Your Washing Machine Is Not Draining Water: 5 Easy Fixes

Understanding Washing Machine Drainage Failures

One of the most frustrating appliance glitches is opening your front-load or top-load washing machine at the end of a cycle only to find soaked clothes sitting in murky water. Here is what causes this problem and how to resolve it safely.

1. Clogged Coin Trap & Debris Filter

In modern front-load machines, loose coins, hairpins, collar buttons, and accumulated lint gather in the bottom debris filter. When clogged, the pump cannot push water out. Unscrew the small round hatch at the bottom right front corner and rinse the filter clean.

2. Kinked or Pinched Drain Hose

If your machine was recently pushed against a wall, the flexible corrugated drain hose might be kinked or crushed. Ensure the hose has smooth curves and is elevated 60cm to 90cm from ground level as recommended by manufacturers.

3. Jammed Drain Pump Impeller

Small threads and lint can wrap around the electric drain pump impeller blades, preventing rotation. If you hear a low humming sound without water draining, the pump impeller is likely locked.

4. Faulty Lid Switch or Door Lock Sensor

For safety reasons, top-load machines will not engage the drain or high-speed spin cycle if the lid switch fails to confirm that the door is firmly closed.

Safety Warning: Always unplug the power cable and place a shallow tray with towels before opening the drain filter to avoid water spillage on floor tiles.
