Why Your Indoor Split AC Leaks Water Inside
Water dripping from your indoor split air conditioning unit onto your bed, furniture, or painted walls is one of the most common AC breakdowns in hot, humid weather. Understanding why condensation accumulates inside helps you resolve it quickly.
1. Blocked Condensate Drain Pipe (Algae & Slime)
As warm room air passes over cold evaporator coils, humidity condenses into liquid water and drips into an internal plastic drain pan. From there, it drains outside through a PVC tube. Over months, airborne dust, mould, and fungi form a jelly-like slime that clogs the pipe, forcing water to overflow inside.
2. Dirty Air Filters Restricting Airflow
When mesh filters are choked with dust, airflow over the cooling coils drops drastically. The refrigerant cannot absorb room heat, causing coils to freeze over. When the compressor cycles off, blocks of ice melt faster than the drain pan can handle, overflowing the unit.
3. Improper Indoor Unit Leveling (Improper Slope)
The indoor unit must be mounted level or with a slight 2-degree downward slope toward the drain exit. If wall anchors loosen or the unit tilts away from the drain outlet, gravity pulls water out of the opposite side of the tray.
4. Cracked or Disconnected Drain Pan
Over years of heat and vibrations, low-grade plastic drain trays can develop hairline cracks near the hose connection nipple, dripping water behind the wallpaper or paint.
