Stopping Water Purifier Leaks Before They Cause Damage
A leaking water purifier not only wastes clean drinking water but can also damage kitchen wooden cabinets, marble countertops, and electrical switches. Identifying the exact source of leakage is simple once you understand RO internal plumbing.
1. Worn O-Rings on Filter Housings
Every pre-filter bowl, sediment candle, and RO membrane housing uses a rubber O-ring gasket to seal under high pressure. When technicians replace filters, pinching the O-ring or failing to lubricate it with food-grade silicone causes continuous dripping.
2. Loose or Degraded Push-Fit Elbow Connectors
RO purifiers use 1/4-inch push-fit (John Guest style) plastic connectors. Over years of vibration from the booster pump, the internal stainless-steel teeth can cut into the plastic tube, allowing water to spray outward.
3. High Water Pressure Without a Pressure Regulator
If your municipal overhead tank or pressure booster pump delivers water pressure exceeding 40 PSI, thin plastic pre-filter bowls can develop hairline fractures and rupture overnight.
4. Leaking Booster Pump Head
The RO booster pump builds up to 100 PSI pressure to force water through the microscopic pores of the reverse osmosis membrane. Over time, the internal rubber diaphragm and Teflon pump head wear out, dripping water from the motor faceplate.
