Why Do Washing Machines Develop Bad Odors?
Modern high-efficiency front-load and top-load washing machines use less water and run cold wash cycles frequently. Over time, un-dissolved detergent residue, fabric softeners, body oils, and lint accumulate behind the outer stainless-steel drum, creating a breeding ground for black mould and bacteria.
1. Deep Clean with White Vinegar and Baking Soda
You do not need harsh industrial chemicals to sanitize your washing drum. Follow this proven 3-step natural method:
- Pour 2 cups of distilled white vinegar directly into the empty drum or detergent drawer.
- Run a heavy-duty wash cycle on the highest temperature setting (60°C or 90°C) without laundry.
- Add half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum and run a second hot rinse cycle to neutralize acidic residues.
2. Wipe Down the Rubber Door Bellows (Gasket)
In front-load washers, water pools in the bottom lip of the flexible rubber door bellow. Pull back the folds and wipe away slimy sludge using a microfiber cloth dipped in vinegar.
3. Soak and Rinse the Detergent Dispenser Drawer
Press the release tab and slide the detergent drawer out. Soak it in warm soapy water for 15 minutes, scrub away caked powder and mould with an old toothbrush, and click it back into place.
